Countdown confirms 100% rent abatement for retail tenants in Alert Level 4

Countdown has today announced it is giving 100 per cent rent abatement to its non essential tenants who have been unable to trade in Alert Level 4, to help support small businesses across the country.

Countdown is offering rent relief to tenants like cafes, hairdressers, takeaway outlets, real estate agencies and restaurants who have shops within Countdown’s supermarkets or shopping centres. The supermarket will also continue rent relief for non-essential tenants in Alert Level 3 who are unable to trade.

Countdown’s Director of Property, Matt Grainger, says Countdown knows lockdowns are incredibly difficult for many small businesses who cannot open for trade, and is keen to help its tenants as much as it can.

“We have more than 60 small businesses as our tenants across New Zealand and quite simply, we feel this is the right thing to do. We are privileged to serve New Zealanders through lockdown, and hopefully offering rent relief will relieve some pressure and allow our tenants to focus on other expenses.

“This is especially needed in Auckland where we’re looking at another two weeks of Alert Level 4. The outlook is uncertain for many small businesses and we want to help our tenants bounce back from this as much as we can,” says Matt Grainger.

Nicola and Gary Upson, owners of Kodak Express Botany and tenants at Countdown Botany, say “It’s been a tough couple of weeks for our business and not having to worry about rent right now has meant we can focus on preparing to reopen as soon as we can and taking care of our team and family. It’s been a huge weight off our shoulders.”

Countdown’s 100% rent abatement will apply for the entire Alert Level 4 lockdown beginning on 18 August and rent relief will continue as needed in Alert Level 3. Countdown has over 60 tenants within its stores and shopping centres in communities across New Zealand.
