Countdown opens its smallest ever store just in time for Christmas
Countdown has today opened its brand new, tiny-but-mighty, Wānaka Metro store - just in the nick of time for locals looking to make a last minute dash for the cream to top the Christmas day Pavlova!
Countdown Wānaka Metro is Countdown’s smallest store yet, at only 140sqm, but packs a punch with a carefully crafted range, perfectly suited to top-up shops and on-the-go lunches for locals and holiday-makers alike.
The store is located right in the heart of Wānaka, with an old BP service station being repurposed to make way for the supermarket development, and is the first Countdown Metro in the South Island.
While initially operating as a small local store, a drive-thru pick-up option for online shopping will be available in early 2022, allowing customers to easily pick up their Countdown online shopping orders at a time that suits them. New online delivery vans will also be running from the store to give locals more delivery time flexibility.
Matt Grainger, Countdown’s Director of Property, says that over the last couple of years Wānaka customers have been seeking more local grocery options with almost 500 online orders making their way over from Queenstown each week.
“We’ve been serving a growing number of customers in the Wānaka community and it’s this growing demand that has driven our decision to bring not only more dedicated online shopping delivery and pick-up options to the area, but a small-sized, highly curated supermarket offering too.
“We’re really looking forward to offering even more flexibility for our Wānaka customers in how and when they choose to shop online with us, as well as providing a selected range of supermarket staples, fresh food and grab-and-go options. We’re also very happy to have welcomed a number of new team members from the local community into our Wānaka team.”
Deputy Mayor of Queenstown Lakes District, Calum MacLeod opened Countdown Wānaka Metro this morning and says that the store will be a fantastic addition to the community.
“It’s exciting to have more and more businesses like Countdown joining the Wānaka community and becoming a part of the local landscape. It’s been great working with the Countdown team to help bring the new Metro store to life and introduce new grocery options to our neck of the woods”
Countdown Wānaka Metro is located at 59 Ardmore Street and will be open from 7am to 10pm over summer. Online orders for Countdown Wānaka Metro will be fulfilled from Countdown Queenstown, meaning customers can access the full Countdown range for their shopping.
