Long-awaited Countdown Pioneer Highway store is on its way!

Countdown is pleased to announce that work on the brand new Countdown supermarket on Pioneer Highway in Awapuni is about to get underway.

Countdown has appointed Watts and Hughes Construction to lead the build, and construction planned to start in November.

The new 3,565 sqm store will include an extensive fresh food section, bakery, health foods section, a Countdown Pharmacy, cellar, Pick Up and Countdown’s latest design features. There are also plans for a cafe at the front of the supermarket.

Matt Grainger, Countdown’s Head of Property, says it’s exciting to be on the way to bringing a brand new store to Palmerston North.

“We know this store has been a long time coming so we’re really looking forward to starting construction in a couple of months. There will also be a future development of retail tenancies around the supermarket which we’re currently designing,” says Matt Grainger.

Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith says he is delighted to hear that Countdown is getting underway with the new supermarket, and believes it will be a huge asset to the local community.

“To say I’m excited by this is an understatement. It’s big news for the city - in particular for the residents of Awapuni, Highbury, Westbrook and Longburn and the new store will be well placed to cater for growth in the city’s southwest.”

“I want to thank Countdown for their continued investment in Palmerston North with their huge lower North Island Distribution Centre under construction near the airport as well,” says Mayor Grant Smith.

The new Pioneer Highway store is expected to open late next year and create around 80 new jobs.  Countdown’s new distribution centre is also expected to be completed late next year and will create 50 new jobs.
