Countdown takes hitting the aisles off the to-do list

Online shopping gets even easier and more affordable for Countdown shoppers


6 November 2017:  Countdown, New Zealand’s leading online retailer, has dropped the price of its online shopping fees across both delivery and it’s Pick up service, making it even more accessible for all New Zealanders.

Pick up is now free if customers spend $50 or more providing greater convenience and a way for busy people to save time.

Now online orders up to $199.99 will have a flat-rate delivery fee of $12, and orders $200 and over are just $8. Countdown customers can also use the Pick up service for free on orders $50 and over.

Sally Copland, Countdown’s Head of Online, says the busy lives New Zealanders lead can make the chore of grocery shopping a real pain point, and hopes the new online shopping fees will encourage customers to get on board with this service. 

“Customers tell us they would love to get an extra hour or two back in their day. Countdown is now making this dream more accessible. A couple of clicks on our online shopping website and our team are waiting to do the grocery shop for you, for a much more affordable fee,” she says.

Fees on average have dropped by 19 per cent for spend up to $200 and 22 per cent for spend greater than $200*. This is all part of Countdown’s ongoing activity to make the online service more accessible and future proofing our business from more competition continuously entering the market.

“We are constantly reviewing and tweaking our digital shopping experience to ensure it’s fast, easy, personalised and seamless across all devices – but ultimately that it’s meeting the expectations of a generation of customers for whom much of life is online. Countdown might be the leading online retailer in New Zealand with more than 20 years experience, but we’re not complacent at all and are continually innovating with new technology,” Sally says.

In late October, Countdown introduced an innovative new Click & Collect app, which will make the service even faster and easier for customers.

The Countdown Click & Collect app, available for both Android and iOS, alerts customers that their online grocery order is ready to pick up while letting the store team know when that customer is nearing their local Countdown store.

In a first for New Zealand retailers, the Click & Collect app uses GPS to create a ‘geo-fence’ with a 400-meter radius around a Countdown store. As a customer approaches the store and ‘breaks’ the fence, the in-store team is alerted. A message is sent back to the customer’s device to let them know the store is aware they’re near and is getting their order ready for collection. When the customer arrives, the order is ready to pick up at the same time.

“This new app is a real game-changer. The Pick up service is designed to make the weekly shop seamless, and now customers can drop in, collect their groceries and get back on their way,” says Sally.

"We are really pleased with the reaction to the app so far. We have already had more than 3600 downloads of the new app across the eight participating stores,” she says.

The first store to offer the Countdown Click & Collect app was Countdown Mt Roskill, with Countdown Whangarei, Takapuna, Birkenhead, Chartwell, Tauranga, Kilbirnie and Bush Inn now also set up with the ‘geo-fence’. Countdown intends to extend this service across the entire network in the coming months.
