Countdown confirms the purchase of Wainuiomata Shopping Centre

6 March 2017: Today Countdown announced it agreed to purchase the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre last week.

Countdown General Manager of Corporate Affairs James Walker says, “Countdown is proud to be part of the Wainuiomata community. We wanted to secure the site to ensure a long term future for a Countdown store, our team and our customers.”

“It is very early days, but we will be considering how we can redevelop the site in due course. We are really excited about the future for Wainuiomata Countdown.” Mr Walker says.

Countdown has already informed its Wainuiomata team about the agreement to purchase.

The Mayor of Lower Hutt Ray Wallace says, “We welcome this announcement,”

“We have worked for some time with the mall owner to facilitate a positive outcome for this site and the Wainuiomata community and I believe this purchase by Woolworths New Zealand Limited is a great result

“This is an exciting time for not only Wainuiomata Countdown but the wider Wainuiomata and Hutt Valley communities and we look forward to hearing more about the plans Woolworths New Zealand Limited have for the site.”

MP for Lower Hutt Chris Bishop says, “This is great news for the Wainui community. The state of the mall is one of the top issues that gets raised with me by residents. I welcome the news and look forward to seeing how the development unfolds.
