Countdown wins big at Steak of Origin: Supreme Brand Champion two years running
17 May 2016: For the second year in a row Countdown’s Angus beef has been declared the Supreme Brand Champion at the 2016 Steak of Origin awards.
The Awards are an annual event run by New Zealand Beef and Lamb to select the best steak producers in the country.
Countdown North Island placed first and second in the Best of Brand: Retail and also took out first place in the Best of Brand: Wholesale & Foodservice. Countdown then went on to take the Supreme Brand Champion Award with its Angus beef. Countdown South Island took out second place in the Best of Brand: Wholesale & Foodservice.
Senior Category Manager Meat & Livestock, John van Boxel, says winning the supreme award again this year is great recognition of the top quality meats that Countdown has to offer.
“We work hard to offer our customers top notch meat in all our stores. Winning these awards with our Angus beef two years running, is a testament of the priority we place on quality meat at low prices every day.
“We work closely with our farmers to achieve these high standards and really these awards show the benefit of us working together to produce exceptional meat for our customers to enjoy,” said Mr van Boxel.
Steaks submitted to the competition go through rigorous testing before the finalists and then winners are announced. A panel of four judges determined the winners from 20 finalists based on criteria such as aroma, tenderness, juiciness and taste.
Countdown’s North Island Meat Plant supplies approximately 400,000kgs (or 600,000 packets) of meat to Countdown’s North Island stores each week.
