Charity Golf Day raises over $147,000 for Alzheimers Auckland
9 March 2016: Countdown’s annual Suppliers Charity Golf Day has successfully raised more than $147,000 for Alzheimers Auckland, to help them provide support for people living with dementia and their carers.
The popular event, which took place in late February and was organised by Parnell Rotary volunteers, was attended by more than 300 Countdown suppliers who each contributed to the impressive donation total.
The funds raised will ensure Alzheimers Auckland can continue to provide support, education and socialisation services for those with dementia and their carers.
Currently there are between 15,000 – 17,000 people with dementia living in Auckland and these numbers are growing with an aging population.
Countdown Managing Director, Dave Chambers says the event is a great way to not only raise funds for an important cause, but to also spend some time with the businesses’ suppliers outside the office.
“We have been supporting this event alongside Parnell Rotary for 13 years now and have helped to raised much needed funds for Alzheimers Auckland so that they can develop their services and meet the growing needs of those suffering from dementia.”
“It’s great for our team to be able to enjoy a day out on the golf course with some of our suppliers, who are keen supporters of this event. We’re looking forward to next year’s!”
Alzheimers Auckland Chief Executive, Rod Perkins, says, “Dementia will both directly and indirectly affect a large number of Auckland families in the coming years, and already one in two people are touched by it in their lifetime. Because of this, Alzheimers Auckland needs to develop their services further to meet this growing need.
“We rely on events like the Countdown Suppliers Charity Golf Day to make up the 50% of our services that are not funded by the government, and we're so grateful to have the support of Countdown and Parnell Rotary – this annual event allows us to help even more people with dementia and their carers to live well."
Countdown’s annual Suppliers Charity Golf Day has now raised over $1.5 million since the first event 13 years ago.
