Countdown drops price of Free Range Chicken
Commits to keeping the price of Macro Free Range chicken low every day
30 June, 2016: Countdown has made free range chicken more affordable for Kiwi families by dropping the price of its most popular cuts of Macro Free Range chicken.
Macro Free Range whole chickens are locked down at $8.99 per kg, down from $10.99 per kg, while Macro Free Range chicken breasts have dropped from $26.99 per kg to $21.99 per kg. Unlike a typical special, as part of Countdown’s Lockdown programme these products remain at this low price every day.
Countdown’s Merchandise Manager for Meat, Alton Gullery, says the move is about making quality free range chicken a more affordable option for families.
“Macro Free Range chicken is an increasingly popular choice – we’ve seen significant growth since we first introduced it to customers six years ago, but we also know that price is key when it comes to choosing what to feed a family each night,” says Mr Gullery.
“Chicken is one of New Zealand’s most popular meats and we believe that lowering the price and keeping it consistent for the long term makes it more accessible for those wanting free range options. It gives people certainty that they can always get a quality free range choice at that low price every day.”
Countdown has also dropped the shelf price of other popular Macro Free Range chicken cuts:
- Macro Chicken Drumsticks were $11.99 per kg, now $10.99 per kg
- Macro Chicken Thigh Fillets were $26.99 per kg, now $23.99 per kg
According to Poultry Industry Association NZ, chicken is one of the most popular meats in New Zealand due to its versatility, price and high source of protein. On average Kiwis consume more than 34kgs of chicken each per year.*
