Countdown in the Community

in the community updated 23.7.12
No industry touches more people in the community than supermarkets. At Countdown, we are proud of our heritage and the role we play in communities around New Zealand.

We are committed to supporting good causes that make life better for Kiwis, and we aim to do this through partnerships with a number of community organisations and charities.

Our stores play an active role in their local communities, supporting community groups and charities through various fundraising activities and campaigns.

CD Kids - Update 23.7.12

The Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal raises funds for hospitals around New Zealand. Now in its sixth year, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has so far raised $5.7 million for 10 children’s hospitals around the country, enabling vital hospital equipment.

Together with our customers, Countdown supports the Appeal year round, and every August through to November, we are dedicated to raising funds in our stores. In 2012 the appeal raised $1.2 million – the most the annual appeal has ever raised!

The hospitals that receive funds from the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal are: Whangarei Hospital, Kidz First Children's Hospital, Auckland, Waikato Hospital, Tauranga and Whakatane Hospitals, Hawkes Bay Hospital, Wellington Hospital, Greymouth Hospital, Christchurch Hospital, Dunedin Hospital, and Southland Hospital.

Foodrescue

Countdown’s Food Rescue programme means that wherever possible, our policy is to donate food that is still fit for consumption to our community charity partners - this sends well in excess of $1 million of groceries annually to food banks via The Salvation Army, Kaibosh in Wellington, Fair Food in West Auckland and 0800 Hungry in Christchurch. As a business, we are also highly motivated to minimise waste, and because of the Countdown Food Rescue initiative, have reduced waste to landfill by 31% in the last three years, despite having an additional 15 stores.

CD-Giving -Local

Giving Local provides a framework so that every Countdown store in New Zealand can give back to their local community through public fundraising activities. For every dollar the store raises for their local cause, the company matches it dollar for dollar, up to a value of $1000.

Salvation

We are proud to partner with The Salvation Army through the Countdown Food Rescue programme, where we provide food that we can no longer sell to The Sallies. Every week our stores work with their local branch to donate food for food banks, and each year we also support The Salvation Army’s biggest appeal, the Red Shield Appeal. Together with our customers and employees we have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to help supply children and their families with food, clothing and essential items, as well as more than $1 million in food donated through Countdown’s Food Rescue each year.

Alzheimers

As New Zealanders grow older, it's inevitable that more people will need help to deal with the devastating effects of dementia. Fortunately, Alzheimers NZ works to help take the strain away and provide practical support to people living with the condition, as well as their careers and family. Countdown has partnered with Alzheimers New Zealand for more than ten years, and during this time we have helped raise over $1.15m for the organisation.

Did you know that in 80% of house fires attended by the New Zealand Fire Service, smoke alarms were either not installed or not working? Since most deaths in house fires are caused by smoke, not flames, it's clear that Kiwis are exposed to some terrible risks in their own homes. That's why Countdown annually teams up with the New Zealand Fire service to help provide smoke alarms for at-risk households.
