Countdown gets local

We have more than 180 stores nationwide, which means we are active in most communities around New Zealand.

Our Countdown stores support their local communities by:

  • Providing people power and getting involved in local community causes and events
  • Fundraising for local charities at Countdown supermarkets
  • Making donations or providing sponsorship for local charities or causes.

If you’re a local charity, school or sports team, and you’re looking for fundraising, you can approach your local Countdown to see if they might be able to help.

Oxfam relief efforts

In response to natural disasters, Countdown partners with Oxfam to assist them in their fundraising efforts.

Following the destruction caused by Cyclone Winston in Fiji and Tonga in February 2016, Countdown and our customers worked with Oxfam to provide help for those in need. Donations could be made in specially marked donation boxes or through the EFTPOS terminal at the checkout. Countdown kick-started the fundraising effort by donating $10,000 to the appeal.

In 2015, Countdown and our customers raised more than $36,000 over March and April for the Oxfam Cyclone Pam Appeal. In the weeks and months following the devastating cyclone that hit Vanuatu, the funds raised helped Oxfam provide shelter, clean water and sanitation to people, especially those left homeless.

‘Windows on the Waitaki’ partnership

In May 2015, our Countdown Oamaru store partnered with the Waitaki District Council and local artists to bring Oamaru residents a new community mural, “Windows on the Waitaki”.

The new Thames Street mural, located along the exterior wall of Countdown includes images incorporating the recognisable architectural, cultural and geographic features of the Oamaru region. The local artists creating the mural are Watts Davies, Trish Shirley and Donna Demente with the project overseen and coordinated by Ken Larraman.

NZ Men's and Women's Hockey support

In October 2015, Countdown Stratford offered their support for the NZ Men’s and Woman’s Hockey teams during the Oceania Cup.

The Oceania Cup, included teams from Australia, Fiji, and Samoa and was played in Stratford in 2015. The competition meant a lot to the NZ teams who were fighting for their place in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Countdown Stratford got behind the event by providing food for both the men’s and woman’s national teams during the tournament.
