Self Serve Checkouts arrive at Countdown Manukau City Mall
Countdown Manukau City Mall has become the latest Countdown supermarket to roll out self serve checkouts, offering a handy alternative for busy shoppers.
Six new self serve checkouts have been installed in store, allowing customers to scan, weigh and pay for their own groceries quickly and easily, using cash, Eftpos, credit or debit cards.
In addition, customers can still claim petrol reward dockets, take cash out on Eftpos transactions, and use their One Card to collect points and discounts.
Brett Ashley, General Manager of Supermarket Operations, said the self-serve option was proving to be popular. “In all the stores where we have installed this new technology customers have really embraced it,” he said.
“Our customers love having the option of being in control of their own time, and it’s great for people with smaller baskets of groceries,” Mr Ashley said.
Approximately one third of transactions go through the self serve checkouts where they have been installed, and in some stores it is as high as 45 percent.
The introduction of self serve checkouts to Countdown Manukau City Mall will have no effect on staff levels.
“Of course they will never fully replace standard or express checkouts but they are certainly a handy alternative for the busy shopper. They provide a great additional service for customers in busy times while only taking up the space of two existing checkouts,” Mr Ashley said.
“The checkouts are user friendly, featuring clear instructions and voice prompts. At least one member of staff will always be stationed close by to talk customers through the technology or to help out if assistance is required.
“We encourage customers at Countdown Manukau City Mall to have a go and enjoy taking control of their shopping experience.”
